How to Create and Practice a Home Evacuation Plan

Step-by-Step Guide
Draw a floor plan of your home
Sketch each floor of your home showing all rooms, hallways, doors, and windows. You do not need architectural precision — a rough layout is fine. Include the garage, basement, and attic if they are occupied spaces.
Mark two exits from every room
For each room, identify a primary exit (usually the door) and a secondary exit (usually a window). Mark both on your floor plan. If a window is the secondary exit, verify it can be opened easily and that the drop is safe or that an escape ladder is available.
Purchase escape ladders for upper floors
For any bedroom on the second floor or higher, purchase a portable fire escape ladder rated for the window height. Store it near the window and practice deploying it. Choose a ladder that hooks over the windowsill and unrolls — no tools required.
Designate an outdoor meeting spot
Choose a specific meeting location at least 50 feet from the home — a mailbox, a neighbor's driveway, or a specific tree. Everyone must go to this spot immediately after evacuating so you can confirm all family members are safe.
Assign roles and special responsibilities
Assign each capable adult or teen a role: one person grabs the emergency kit, one checks on children or elderly family members, one brings pets. No one should re-enter the home once out. Designate a neighbor's house as the backup meeting point.
Practice the evacuation drill
Walk through the plan with the entire household during daylight first. Then practice at night with lights off — fires often happen while people are sleeping. Use a timer: everyone should be outside and at the meeting spot within two minutes.
Repeat drills twice per year
Schedule drills every six months — once in spring and once in fall. Vary the scenario: block one exit to simulate it being unusable, practice crawling low under simulated smoke, and test whether everyone remembers the meeting spot.
Post the plan and update as needed
Print the floor plan with marked exits and post it in a common area like the kitchen or hallway. Update the plan whenever room layouts change, new family members move in, or physical abilities change. Share the plan with babysitters and guests.
